Wendy Smith

Wendy K. Smith er Dana J. Johnson Professor i Ledelse og fakultetsdirektør for Women’s Leadership Initiative ved Lerner College of Business and Economics, University of Delaware. Hun er også medlem af Academy of Management og sidder i det 5-årige ledelsesspor for Academy of Management Organization and Management Theory Division.

Hun tog sin ph.d. i organisatorisk adfærd på Harvard Business School, hvor hun begyndte sin intensive forskning i spændinger og konkurrerende krav. Hendes arbejde er blevet beskrevet som “tænkning om tænkning”, der giver dyb indsigt i, hvorfor folk typisk vælger enten/eller-tilgange, og hvordan man kan skifte til en mere produktiv og generativ både/og-tænkning. Disse indsigter har fået hende til at udforske, hvordan man kan navigere i strategiske paradokser – hvordan ledere og lederteams effektivt kan tage vare på modstridende, men indbyrdes afhængige krav.

Wendy Smith arbejder med ledere og forskere over hele verden og har modtaget Web of Science Highly Cited Research Award (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023) for at være blandt de 1 procent mest citerede forskere inden for sit felt og modtaget Decade Award (2021) fra Academy of Management Review for den mest citerede artikel i de sidste 10 år. Hendes arbejde er blevet offentliggjort i toptidsskrifter som Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, Harvard Business Review og Management Science.

Hendes nyligt udgivne bog med medforfatter Marianne Lewis “Both/And Thinking: Embracing Creative Tensions to Solve Your Toughest Problem” er blevet udnævnt til en af de 10 bedste bøger i 2023 af Thinkers50, var en finalist til Next Big Idea Award og har været en #1 New Release på Amazon.

Sammen med Marianne Lewis vandt hun Thinkers50 Breakthrough Idea Award i 2023. Hun har undervist på University of Delaware, Harvard University og University of Pennsylvania-Wharton, mens hun har hjulpet topledere og mellemledere over hele verden med at løse problemer med samarbejde, præstation, organisatorisk forandring og innovation.

Wendy K. Smith  is the Dana J. Johnson Professor of Management and faculty director of the Women’s Leadership Initiative at the Lerner College of Business and Economics, University of Delaware. She is also a fellow of the Academy of Management and serves on the 5-year leadership track for the Academy of Management Organization and Management Theory Division.  She earned her PhD in organizational behavior at Harvard Business School, where she began her intensive research on tensions and competing demands.

Her work has been described as “thinking about thinking,” offering deep insight into why people typically adopt either/or approaches and how to shift to more productive and generative both/and thinking.  These insights have led her to unpack the nature and navigation of strategic paradoxes—how leaders and senior teams effectively respond to contradictory, yet interdependent demands.

Working with executives and scholars globally, she received the Web of Science Highly Cited Research Award (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023) for being among the 1 percent most-cited researchers in her field and received the Decade Award (2021) from the Academy of Management Review for the most cited paper in the past 10 years.

Her work has been published in such top journals as Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, Harvard Business Review, and Management Science. Her recently released book with co-author Marianne Lewis, Both/And Thinking: Embracing Creative Tensions to Solve Your Toughest Problems, has been named one of the top 10 books of 2023 by Thinkers50, a finalist for the Next Big Idea Award, and a  #1 New Release on Amazon. Together with Marianne Lewis, she won the 2023 Thinkers50 Breakthrough Idea Award.

She has taught at the University of Delaware, Harvard University, and the University of Pennsylvania–Wharton while helping senior leaders and middle managers all over the world address issues of interpersonal dynamics, team performance, organizational change, and innovation.
